How technology changed the NFL for the better

The game of football has dramatically increased over time. The technology built around the game helps pretty much everyone of the field. Players, Coaches, referees, fans, reporters and even trainers. Just to think that the game itself just started with a bunch of x and o’s on a chalkboard to black and white TVs with no replay system available is crazy to me. In my opinion technology and the background of the game of football is one of the most important aspects of the game.

One of the newest additions to the game was when Microsoft paired with the NFL and gave the players the ability to use their technology of the surface pro’s. Players and coaches use this technology to their advantages. NFL Operations says that, “The Sideline Viewing System app lets coaches zoom in, make annotations, review plays and tag 'favorites' for later review. As with the old system — but in a more immediate, flexible and efficient way — teams use the information to adjust play-calling and instruct their players as the game unfolds” (NFL OPS).

This makes it easier on the coaches and the players to call plays and make decisions on the fly and increase the odds of each play. Not only do the surface pros help through replay tho. The technology of the tablet allows trainers to keep health records on player injuries and player status and help with any medical needs and importances for players as they travel from stadium to stadium. This technology helps trainers keep information more organized and allows them to test the players for head injuries and symptoms by baseline questions provided by numerous tests and helps them make the choice if the player should re enter the game if he gets hurt.

Another piece of technology that improves the NFL is the replay system. The replay system helps the referees make calls and change calls by reviewing a play. This really helps determine a game when it is very close and through tough calls. It ultimately allows the referees to slow down the game and go through the rule book to determine the right call that should be made instead of going of the naked eye.

One of the most advanced replay cameras that has recently came to the game were pylon cameras. These cameras give refs the ability to see angles of repay that have never been there before. You can see if the ball crosses the line or if the player maintained the ability to stay in bounce through the process of the play.

I think that technology of the football advanced the game for the better and developed smooth game play and the other amazing ability it supplies. New technology is being developed and tested to change the game for the better. Viewers also get the ability to witness the actions to fulfill any questions or calls on the field through these technologies. Its crazy how far this game has come.

  1. DO you ever worry that the Surface Pro is being used as a gimmick? In the sense that it is essentially one big advertisement for the product?

    1. In some ways yes. It has been advertised in the past. But I dont worry that it may be using for a gimmick. I worry about other teams using the Surface Pro to violate the laws of the NFL.

  2. Do you think that this technology has changed the concept of the game, and possibly how it is played? By being able to go back, does it make playing easier or harder on coaches and players?
